Artist Selection
Behind the Easel does not work with artists who perform for the camera.
We work with painters who are willing to let us into the reality of their practice, the decisions, the doubt, the reworking, the moments where everything changes and the moments where nothing does.
The artists you will find here are working painters. Exhibiting, teaching, making. Each one brings a practice that is entirely their own, and a studio that holds the evidence of years of serious work.
We film them over the course of days, not hours. The result is something closer to a portrait than a tutorial, a record of how a painter thinks, not just how they paint.
A PRACTIVE WITH SUBSTANCE
We are interested in painters who have been doing this seriously for years. Not necessarily painters with the longest exhibition list, but painters for whom the work is a genuine daily discipline. The canvas is not a hobby. The studio is not a backdrop.
A process worth following
Some painters work in a way that rewards an audience. The decisions are visible. The thinking is traceable. The work changes in front of you in ways that are surprising, even to them. We are drawn to process that is alive, uncertain in the best possible sense.
to be seen honestly
This is perhaps the most important thing we ask of any artist. Not performance. Not explanation. Simply the willingness to work as they always work, with a camera present. The painters who do this well are rarer than you might think.
Work that stands on its own
Before we ever visit a studio, we spend time with the work itself. We look at it carefully and at length. The paintings tell us a great deal about whether the process behind them is one worth documenting.
